Our History
Whether you’re one to keep an eye on the pennies, get satisfaction from bagging a bargain, or just to keep perfectly functional items off landfill sites, buying other peoples things online makes good sense.
Sellthingslocally.com has been trading as a Yahoo group site since 2007 helping provide a lucrative market for those who want to de-clutter their homes and earn extra cash from items they no longer need.
Some big players in this market, such as e-Bay, already provide an excellent service. However, scratch beneath the surface and like Adrian Munns and Peter Barnett, founders of Sellthingslocally.com – you may find your environmental subconscious is nagging – and here is why:
Is it really necessary to send items many thousands of miles across oceans either stuck in some container ship or in the hold of a cargo- plane? Indeed, you can go one further and ask yourself is it really necessary to wrap up, post or courier items up and down the country in the back of a delivery van.
It is dilemmas such as these that set green consumers Peter and Adrian (from Twickenham, Middlesex) on a mission to develop an e-commerce site with an environmental agenda.
Sellthingslocally.com launched in the Richmond-upon-Thames borough, initially as a Yahoo Group site. It is built on the ethos that goods can be bought and sold online within a local area, so that the amount of air and road miles clocked up transporting these goods could be dramatically reduced.
We choose Richmond as the launch pad because of the area’s environmental credentials, and because we had the backing of the Richmond Environmental Network.
